1. Twelfth Night, by Shakespeare

-Comedy-Mistaken Identities, Confusion, Romance (Different types of love, suffering

-Act III, i, 147-158:

Olivia to Viola (Cesario):

O, what a deal of scorn looks beautiful

In the contempt and anger of his lip!

A murderous guilt shows not itself more soon

Than love that would seem hid: love’s night is noon.

Cesario, by the roses of the spring,

By maidhood, honour, truth and every thing,

I love thee so, that, maugre all thy pride,

Nor wit nor reason can my passion hide.

Do not extort thy reasons from this clause,

For that I woo, thou therefore hast no cause,

But rather reason thus with reason fetter,

Love sought is good, but given unsought better.

- In the passage above Shakespeare uses poetic tools such as metaphors and couplets to describe love a specific type of love that Lady Olivia has for Cesario. Because Cesario is really Viola, she does not return feel the same way. Olivia therefore feels that her love is neglected. Shakespeare shows how this love intensifies with neglect. Throughout the rest of the play we see all different types of love.

- DUKE ORSINO

Be not amazed; right noble is his blood.

If this be so, as yet the glass seems true,

I shall have share in this most happy wreck.

[To VIOLA]

Boy, thou hast said to me a thousand times

Thou never shouldst love woman like to me.

VIOLA

And all those sayings will I overswear;

And those swearings keep as true in soul

As doth that orbed continent the fire

That severs day from night.

-Viola (Cesario), Orsino, Olivia, Sebastian

- Setting: Illyria, Symbols: All types of love, at first sight, neglected, true

-Summary: Viola falls in love with Orsino, but she is disguised as his worker, Cesario. Therefore, Orsino believes that she is a man and loves Lady Olivia. Like Orsino, Olivia does not know Cesario’s true identity and she falls in love with him (Viola’s male disguise). Everyone is very confused by these mistaken identities, and through comedy, their true feelings and love are revealed.

2. The Odyssey, by Homer

- Epic, Mythology, Odysseus’ long journey home, facing all types of challenges (Poseidon, suitors)

-Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns driven time and again off course, once he had plundered the hallowed heights of Troy. Many cities of men he saw and learned their minds, many pains he suffered, heartsick on the open sea, fighting to save his life and bring his comrades home. But he could not save them from disaster, hard as he strove—
the recklessness of their own ways destroyed them all, the blind fools, they devoured the cattle of the Sun and the Sungod blotted out the day of their return. Launch out on his story, Muse, daughter of Zeus, start from where you will—sing for our time too.

-(Odysseus, in his tale:)‘“Dear friends, surely we are not unlearned in evils. This is no greater evil now than it was when the Cyclopshad us cooped in his hollow cave by force and violence, but even there, by my courage and counsel and my intelligence, we escaped away. I think that all this will be remembered some day too. Then do as I say, let us all be won over.”’ (12.208-213)

-Odysseus, Telemachus, Athena, Penelope

-Setting: Aegean, oceans surrounding Ithaca, Ithaca, Symbols: the wedding bed, the great bow

-Summary: After the Trojan War ends, Odysseus begins his long journey home to Ithaca to be reunited with his wife and son. With the help of Athena, Odysseus battles many temptations and conflicts (even facing Poseidon). He returns home, disguised as a beggar, to find his palace full of suitors trying to take his wife and kingdom. Soon he works with his son to reclaim his kingdom. His true identity is revealed when he strings his bow as a part of a competition. After an endless journey home, Odysseus is with his family, ruling Ithaca.

Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom
So, till the judgment that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lover’s eyes.

Let me confess that we two must be twain,
Although our undivided loves are one:
So shall those blots that do with me remain,
Without thy help, by me be borne alone.
In our two loves there is but one respect,
Though in our lives a separable spite,
Which though it alter not love’s sole effect,
Yet doth it steal sweet hours from love’s delight.
I may not evermore acknowledge thee,
Lest my bewailed guilt should do thee shame,
Nor thou with public kindness honour me,
Unless thou take that honour from thy name:
But do not so, I love thee in such sort,
As thou being mine, mine is thy good report.

1. What poetic device do the first two lines invoke?

a) connotation

b) paradox

c) allusion

d) simile

2. What is the tone of the narrator in the sonnet?

a) resigned

b) peeved

c) happy

d) invigorated

3. What does not alter “love’s sole effect”?

a) blots

b) twain

c) two loves

d) separable spite

4. What is the theme of the sonnet?

a) how time passes

b) the imminence of death

c) the choice of a lover to be estranged from his partner

d) how strong the speaker needs to be, but how weak he really is

That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruin’d choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.
In me thou seest the twilight of such day
As after sunset fadeth in the west,
Which by and by black night doth take away,
Death’s second self, that seals up all in rest.
In me thou see’st the glowing of such fire
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,
As the death-bed whereon it must expire
Consumed with that which it was nourish’d by.
This thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well which thou must leave ere long.

1) The tone used in this poem can best be described as:

(A) INFORMATIVE (B) ANXIOUS (C) HOPELESS (D) GRIEVING

2) The word “Consumed” in context is best deciphered as:

(A) BOUGHT (B) USED (C) EATEN BY (D) DESTROYED

3) The line, “In me thou seest the twilight of such day” is one example of what type of poetic device?

(A) SIMILE (B) IMAGERY (C) PERSONFICATION (D) METAPHOR

4) What appears to be best choice for the major theme throughout the sonnet?

(A) Hatred for one another (B) age and its effects on love between two people (C) The relationship between humans and nature (D) The author’s feelings for another person

When I do count the clock that tells the time,
And see the brave day sunk in hideous night,
When I behold the violet past prime,
And sable curls all silvered o’er with white:
When lofty trees I see barren of leaves,
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd
And summer’s green all girded up in sheaves
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard:
Then of thy beauty do I question make
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake,
And die as fast as they see others grow,
And nothing ‘gainst Time’s scythe can make defence
Save breed to brave him, when he takes thee hence.

1) Which of these is a major theme of this sonnet?

a. Jealousy

b. Depression

c. Betrayal

d. Time

2). What is the narrator’s tone in this sonnet?

a. Understanding

b. Angry

c. Sad

d. Happy

3). The line “Save breed to brave him” is an example of what poetic device?

a. metaphor

b. simile

c. alliteration

d. allegory

4). The word “lofty” most nearly means which of the following?

a. colorful

b. giant

c. weathered

d. small

No more be grieved at that which thou hast done:
Roses have thorns, and silver fountains mud,
Clouds and eclipses stain both moon and sun,
And loathsome canker lives in sweetest bud.
All men make faults, and even I in this,
Authorizing thy trespass with compare,
Myself corrupting, salving thy amiss,
Excusing thy sins more than thy sins are;
For to thy sensual fault I bring in sense –
Thy adverse party is thy advocate –
And ‘gainst myself a lawful plea commence.
Such civil war is in my love and hate
That I an accessary needs must be
To that sweet thief which sourly robs from me

1. The following line is an example of what poetic tool:

Thy adverse party is thy advocat

a) oxymoron

b) alliteration

c) paradox

d) metaphor

2. The narrator’s tone is best described as

a) amorous

b) conflicted

c) lugubrious

d) unaffected

3. The word “accessary” in line 13 most likely means

a) jewelry

b) a supplement to

c) German synthpop/electro-industrial group

d) someone who assists in committing a crime

4. The first three lines are examples of what poetic device?

a) juxtaposition

b) apostrophe

c) metaphor

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see,
For all the day they view things unrespected;
But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee,
And darkly bright are bright in dark directed.
Then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright,
How would thy shadow’s form form happy show
To the clear day with thy much clearer light,
When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so!
How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed made
By looking on thee in the living day,
When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade
Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay!
All days are nights to see till I see thee,
And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.

1) The line, “darkly bright are bright in dark directed” is an example of what poetic device?
A) Metaphor B) Alliteration C) Assonance D) Simile

2) In context, “heavy” (line 12) is best interpreted to mean:

A) deep or intense B) weighing more than usual C) loud D) hard to bear

3) Which of the following is not an example of paradox?

A) “darkly bright” B) “unseeing eyes” C) “All days are nights” D)”In dreams they look on thee”

In John Donne’s Sonnet 10, the speaker is trying to challenge Death. He addresses Death as a “slave to fate” and tries to challenge its power and discusses the rewards of eternal life. Donne utilizes apostrophe and personification in his poem to allow him to directly address death as a person, adding strength to his message about the importance of dying in the journey to the afterlife. Dunne continues to use powerful language in his Sonnet 14, where the speaker is showing his submission to God. This desire to have God “batter [his] heart” expresses irony: the speaker can only be spiritually freed after being “thrashed” and “beaten.”
